I have more than 30 years of experience, making and
playing traditional Irish flutes
The first flute I made was made out of oak because my father was a boat repairer and had plenty of timber pieces lying around. I burnt the first few flutes I made because they were really bad. I continued working with oak until I was happy with what I was hearing. I got my first piece of Africian Blackwood timber from Eugene Lambe, a piper, pipe maker and flute maker from Co. Clare. Thirty years later, I am still making traditional Irish flutes. I make flutes to order and it takes about two months from placing an order to recieving your flute. They are made from sustainably sourced African blackwood, commonly known as Mpingo in Swahili it is generally used in the manufacture of clarinets, oboes, bagpipes and other musical instruments and has been traded to European countries for this purpose since the early nineteenth century, its heartwood is commonly known to be one of the most valuable materials used in the production of musical instruments. Although the heartwood is one of the most expensive timbers in the world, very low material yield has recently resulted in the significant reduction of natural individuals. This might have serious impact on local communities, because this tree is apparently the only species that can support their livelihoods.

Senior All-Ireland Fleadhs, numerous Junior All-Irelands and a senior Duet with Maeve Donnelly.
I also compose music and make traditional flutes in my workshop here in Carna.”

“Siolla gon Ghaoth” was written for the 25th anniversary of the Festival of traditional singing in Carna which has taken place every year
since 1986. Seosamh Ó hÉanaí (Joe Heaney) who was born here in the remote fishing community of Carna, County Galway in 1919, was
widely regarded as the archetype of the Séan Nós (Old Style) singer.

I make flutes in three standard keys, Dmajor, Ebmajor and Bbmajor, and have two different types of
flute, Pratten (where the upper middle and lower middle are in one piece) and Rudell & Rose (where
the upper middle and lower middle are separated by a joint).
The type of wood used in the making of my flutes is mostly African Blackwood, but I have been
experimenting with Rio Rosewood, Lignum Vitae and Purpleheart. The cases for these flutes are
cherrywood.

I don’t remember when I started playing music but I strongly believe that music was in my genes.
My mother told me that when I was in her womb, that whenever she heard a tune on the radio I
would start kicking. She always knew that I would be a musician, dancer or singer.
